Dr. Dhrubesh Chandra Regmi (Sitar):

Dr Dhrubesh Chandra Regmi (Sitar):   Dr. Dhrubesh Chandra Regmi is a rare exponent of sitar belonging to the illustrious musical family of Nepal. His great grandfather Dev C Regmi is credited for pioneering sitar in Nepal. Dev C who was researching on Samveda in Varanasi (India) was summoned by the erstwhile Rana ruler Maharaja Bir Shumsher to Nepal. His grandfather Krishna C Regmi was the recipient of coveted Indra Rajya Laxmi Award for his contribution to the Nepali music.

As a toddler Dhrubesh would listen to the music played by his grandfather and father Prof Satish C Regmi. The musical environment at home inculcated a deep interest of music in Dhrubesh’s tender mind and heart. Under the tutelage of his father he honed his skills as he grew up and subsequently joined the music school, such as, Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya in India and subsequently in Delhi University. He also did graduation in law alongside the pursuits in the classical music. But, his career as a legal practitioner lived only for a while as he preferred a musician to a lawyer.

Dhrubesh feels himself very fortunate to avail lessons from the likes of Prof Anil Dhar, Pundit Binay Chandra Maudgalya (Bhaiji), Pt. Bimalendu Mukherjee, Pt. Debu Chaudhary, Pt. Rabindra K Adesra, and Ustad duo Imrat Khan and Nishad Khan. Most importantly, he systematically and relentlessly learnt sitar with the legendary maestro Pt. Uma Shankar Mishra in accordance with guru-shishya (master-disciple) tradition for four years.

Dhrubesh became the first musician to hold PhD degree in music in Nepal. He was awarded Doctor of Philosophy from Delhi University for his dissertation titled "History of music in Nepal with special reference to classical music during the Rana period."

Dhrubesh an Associate Professor at Tribhuvan University is now a respected name in the genre of Nepal's folk-classical music. He is also a recipient of various prestigious awards and prizes, such as, First Prize in Radio Nepal's Classical Music Competition (1989), Kiranteshwor Sangeetashram Award (2002), Swar Sangam Youth Sangeet Award (2004) to name a few.
